Echocardiogram
A non-invasive diagnostic procedure in which ultrasonic
waves are used to create a two-dimensional view of the
heart. Structures within the heart can be easily
evaluated with this procedure. Flow of blood within the
heart and across valves can also be evaluated.
Transesophageal Echocardiogram
Cardiac structures are more clearly visualized by
echocardiogram using a probe within the esophagus
directly behind the heart.
Nuclear Cardiac Imaging
This procedure is done in the office using a nuclear
imaging agent to evaluate for blockages in coronary
arteries and is usually combined with a treadmill or
chemical stress test.
EKG
A diagnostic test that studies the heart’s electrical
activity to screen for possible abnormalities in the
heart’s blood circulation, rhythm or muscle.
Cardiac Catheterization
A diagnostic procedure that delineates the severity of a
patient’s heart disease. This information allows the
physician to design a specific treatment program.
Cardiac catheterization involves gathering hemodynamic
data from within the heart as well as injecting contrast
dye to produce x-ray images of the heart and heart
arteries.
Carotid
Doppler
Carotid
Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses
sound waves to measure the flow of blood through the
large carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain.
These arteries can narrow due to arteriosclerosis or
other causes and this can lead to TIA (mini-stroke) or
CVA (stroke). This test can help doctors to determine
stroke risk and help determine preventive measures.
ABI or Ankle Brachial Index
A non-invasive diagnostic procedure which compares arm
(brachial artery) blood pressure to leg blood pressure
to evaluate for peripheral vascular disease.
Event Monitoring and Holter Recording
A heart rhythm monitor used at home by patients to
evaluate palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, and other
intermittent symptoms, or to judge effectiveness of
treatment. Event recording is often used to diagnose
infrequent heart rhythms.
